Website design and mockup tools
For many years, I've designed websites with pen and paper - starting with the page layout for the template, and also the navigation site map. I've sometimes used Visio for the sitemaps, if other people were involved in the design (just to make it neater), but page layout has always been a bit of an issue - especially as I'm not really great with graphic design. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to Balsamiq mockups, which is a great tool for designing interactive website pages - really good. You can also collaborate with it, which makes it even more powerful. The only problem with Balsamiq, is that there is no sitemap tool to tie all of the pages together.
I've just come across another tool which shows a lot of promise - it's called jumpchart. You can find it at jumpchart.com. This looks good, as it has a sitemap tool as well as a page layout tool, so it takes care of the whole shebang. The page layout tool isn't nearly as good as the Balsamiq tool, but as it's free, I'll give it a go.
Another very useful mockup tool that I've used in the past is the Pencil Project. This is a Firefox plugin, but has a lot of great features and can be used as a complete page design tool.
